How does a 4 speed automatic transmission with overdrive work ?

if u have a 4 speed auto plus overdrive u still only have 4 gears the overdrive is not a gear its electronic and brings the revs down when the on is pushed to save fuel consumption and yes when ur in d and at a stop its in first gear
