Several Java Virtual Machines Running in the Same Process Caused an Error - how do I fix this?

I get this error message every time I try to run an application that requires Java (Yahoo Games, Pogo - etc). Uninstalling Java and downloading the software again does not help. My laptop runs off Windows XP. Please help if possible. Thanks!
