Is it possible to buy a home if unemployed for a year, but will be starting a new job?

I was wondering if it was possible to buy a house (as I can't find one to rent in my area) after being unemployed for a year by being laid-off but now have a job that I'll be starting in a week? Will I be penalized for the year that I couldn't find a job, or will the fact that I'm now working again be enough?
