PS3 HEADSET NOT WORKING?

Hi i have the official ps3 sony headset and it turns on alright but it but when i try and talk to my friends it doesnt speak so i hear the voices through the tv so anyway i tried going on voice changer and it say i have no headset so i tried deleteding the headset off of my managed divices thingy... what do i need to do? also how do i re connect it to ps3?
